Bolesworth Young Horse Championship

Jess Crofts

We have just returned from a very lovely, but at times rather soggy British Young Horse Championships and CSI2* at Bolesworth Castle in Cheshire.

The jumping started on Wednesday with young horse classes in the most hideous wet and windy weather.  David started the day with Full Monty in the four year old class in the Castle Arena, going double clear and finishing equal first, Louise jumped Noble de Reve in a quite strong five year old qualifier in the same ring to finish with a very respectable four faults.

David then jumped the homebred Balloon Cruise in the incredibly strong six year old qualifier in the main ring.  Balloon Cruise jumped really well for four faults. The Louise jumped Donna Pascale in the seven year olds in the main ring for a double clear and equal first place.

The international horses started the day on a sunny Thursday.  Louise and Jenson 55 sped round the Grand Prix Qualifier for 3rd place and Cognac then took on a strong field to win the 1.30.  Gutera Cara Dubh had a green four faults in the Grand Prix Qualifer and Hennessey jumped a great double clear in the 1.30 to finish 15th.

The four and five year olds jumped in the main ring on Thursday which was a big atmosphere for them. The Full Monty jumped a good round for four faults and Noble de Reve jumped beautifully also for four faults.

On Friday Cognac jumped another very good double clear to finish 3rd in the 1.30 and Donna Pascale jumped a superb round in the six year olds in the main ring to finish 6th. For David Hennessy jumped another double clear in the 1.30 to finish 13th. Gutera jumped in the 1.45 and Balloon Cruise jumped another good round in the Six Year olds.

On Saturday Full Monty kicked off the young horse finals with a great double clear to finish equal first in the four year olds. Hennessey jumped another double clear in the 1.30 to finish 10th.

Sunday was the final day of a very long show.  Balloon Cruise jumped two superb rounds in the Six Year Old Championship to finish 14th and Gutera finished the show with a good round in a very difficult 1.35.

It was great to see our pupils going so well: Antonia Platt was clear jumping in the Grand Prix qualifier the first day with Amigo, she won the six year olds the second day with Imerald S and G Star Blue jumped consistently well for lower placings in the CSI2* 1.30’s. Our former working pupil Charlene Bastone jumped well every day finishing with 8th place in the Grand Prix on Sanlou and Sarah Lewis had a successful show with her young horses Hurricane Heidi and Askeaton.

With terrible weather in the run-up to the show and a very wet Wednesday and Friday the team at Bolesworth did a fabulous job to run the show at all.  It was a fabulous venue to showcase what lovely horses are being bred and produced in Britain, and although it was a long and sometimes wet show the atmosphere was great every day.
